Tomorrow’s Story 2018

Freedom’s Journey was honored to have Steve Long of Black Hills Fox as our Emcee for the evening!!

Steve Long:

Steve is currently an Evening Anchor and Reporter for KEVN-TV (Black Hills Fox News).  He’s spent his career as a TV Anchor/Reporter at cities all across the Midwestern U.S.   During this time, he’s been honored with 39 state and multi-state awards for excellence in journalism.  He’s a full time single father and engaged to be married.

Three extraordinary speakers who shared with us at “An Evening with Freedoms Journey”

Kelly Patterson:

“We’re excited to introduce the first of our event speakers to you!!

We are honored to have Human Trafficking Survivor and Sex Trafficking Consultant Kelly Patterson share from her experiences.

“While shame and pain kept her quiet for years, Kelly’s journey of healing and freedom from sexual exploitation are giving her a loud voice today. Believing that unity is key, she enjoys collaborating with others to wage war against sex slavery. Kelly has traveled to hostile and distant areas to carry her message of freedom. Her courage to walk into a crowd and discuss the controversial is a communication gift that she excels in.

Coming from the perspective of one who has walked the long road out, Kelly has a dynamic style and ability to relate to her audience. As a speaker, she is engaging and unafraid to tell it like it is. Withholding the hard truths is not a road she has chosen to take.”

Kelly’s book, “From Trafficked to Treasured” is scheduled to be available in mid-July!”

Mark Vargo:

We’re excited to announce that Pennington County State’s Attorney, and all around good guy, Mark Vargo will be an event speaker at Tomorrow’s Story!!  We’re looking forward to what he has to share on human trafficking right here in our community!

Mr. Vargo’s Bio:      Mark began his prosecutorial career working as an Assistant State Attorney for                                                        Janet Reno in Dade County, where he was the Deputy Chief of the Traffic Division.

He moved to South Dakota in 1992, where he served as a Deputy State’s Attorney for three years, during which time he was primarily responsible for the prosecutions for child abuse and child sexual abuse in Pennington County.

After a brief stint in private practice, he moved to the United States Attorney’s Office in Rapid City for 15 years. While there, he prosecuted gun and drug cases for the western half of South Dakota, as well as violent crime and drug cases occurring on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

In 2012, Mark ran for Pennington County State’s Attorney, was sworn into office in January, 2013, and began his second term in 2017. He was honored by his peers as South Dakota’s Prosecutor of the Year for 2015 and serves as South Dakota’s representative to the National District Attorneys’ Association.

Dusty Johnson:

We are very pleased to announce that even with his hectic schedule Dusty Johnson has agreed to be one of the featured speakers at out event!

Dusty grew up in the Pierre area, opened his first business at the age of sixteen and met his wife Jacquelyn, while attending USD in Vermillion.

After completing graduate school they returned home to South Dakota where Governor Mike Rounds asked Dusty to join his policy staff. During his tenure in the Governors office Dusty ran for and won a seat on the Public Utilities Commission, winning another six year term in 2010.

He was asked to relinquish that post a week after the election by Governor Daugaard and to take on the role of overseeing much of the state government as his Chief of Staff. After serving twelve years in state government Dusty returned to the private sector in Mitchell to spend time with his wife and three boys, Max, Ben and Owen.

Nowadays you’ll find Dusty on the campaign trail as he seeks to become South Dakotas lone representative to the U.S. House.
